Many places around the world are known for their cuisine and architecture. For Salvador da Bahia, you can add music to that list, as it is here that the influences of Africa, with its drum-centered rhythms, have found an enthusiastic following. As for the city’s architecture, it is not to be dismissed. Salvador da Bahia (Bahia for short) was the first capital of Brazil and seat of the first Catholic Bishop of the country, giving the city’s neighborhoods a historic air. Many monuments in the heart of town, called the Pelourinho, date from the 17th through the 19th centuries, earning the district a place on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites.

During your visit, you will admire the city’s European-style buildings, enhanced by the melon greens, soft yellows and sky blues so typical of Brazil. Other Bahia attractions include 31 miles of beaches and its own carnival, during which almost two million people celebrate in the city streets.
