Holland America Line Names Dutch Royal Member As Godmother For New Vessel
Holland America Line announced today that when Rotterdam is named next spring, Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands will become the ship’s godmother. This continues a tradition that began in the 1920s, and will mark the 13th time a cruise ship will be named by a Dutch Royal.
Holland America Line’s connection to The House of Orange goes back nearly a century to Prince Hendrik launching Statendam III in 1929. Since then, members of the Dutch Royal Family have launched 11 additional Holland America Line vessels throughout the years, including Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet who named Prinsendam (1972), Nieuw Amsterdam III (1983), Rotterdam VI (1997) and Oosterdam (2003).
Additional members of the Dutch Royal Family who are godmothers include Queen Máxima, who named Koningsdam in 2016 and Nieuw Amsterdam in 2010. Then-Queen Beatrix served as Eurodam’s godmother in 2008. Rotterdam V was launched in 1958 by Queen Juliana. Then-Princess Beatrix named Statendam IV in 1957 and Prinses Margriet in 1960. Nieuw Amsterdam II was launched by Queen Wilhelmina in 1937.

Celebrity Cruises has identified November 2, 2021 as the date for the naming ceremony of the Celebrity Apex. There will be a 2-night inaugural sailing from the U.S.
In addition to the ship’s naming ceremony, guests for the inaugural voyage will enjoy a series of immersion sessions allowing them to experience numerous amenities to the fullest, from culinary sessions to the world-class spa in addition to many more.
Structurally speaking, Apex features an innovative outward-facing design and visionary spaces from world-renowned designers, connecting guests to the breath-taking world around them as never before. The entire experience can perhaps best be described as “new luxury.”
MSC Cruises’ New Flagship MSC Seashore’s Naming Ceremony To Take Place In November
MSC Cruises has confirmed that their latest flagship, MSC Seashore, will officially be named at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in the Bahamas on November 18, 2021. This represent a “first” for any cruise ship, i.e., the first Naming Ceremony to be conducted on a private island.
Invitees will be able to get a first look at the new ship before she starts her inaugural 7-night cruise and U.S. season on November 20. Guests will appreciate the endless onboard entertainment and activities, as well as an exceptional choice of bars and restaurants.
As has been the case with every new MSC Cruises ship, celebrity actress Sophia Loren will perform the role of Godmother as she officially names her 16th MSC Cruises ship. The festivities will take place both on board and on the island as the ship will remain docked throughout the night, with a gala dinner, live entertainment and more.
The naming of MSC Seashore will see the formal inauguration of Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, which opened in late 2019 and closed shortly thereafter due to the pandemic. The island has since undergone further enhancement and significant improvements, allowing MSC Cruises to showcase the island to invitees on this occasion.
