The Whisper Stops At Barbados
Let’s talk about Barbados, the third port on the Silversea World Cruise…this port has so much to offer. The ship ports there on Jan. 12 from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., so there is plenty of time to experience Barbados and have a very full day there.
My favorite things to do are visiting the churches (always amazed at the different architecture), local museums and, of course, browse the shop and maybe have a local taste of the food. At a minimum stop for a coffee and treat.
What about Barbados? This is the only island in the Caribbean that has daily flights to the United States, Canada, and England — and the island sees about 500,000 visitors a year. It is very oriented to the traveler.
Ships dock at the Deep Water Harbour on the northwest side of Carlisle Bay at Bridgeport. Once off the ship, you’ll find duty-free shops, vendors, a tourist information desk, a post office, phones and a taxi stand.
Referred to as “Town” by the locals, Bridgetown is the capital of Barbados and its commercial center; and the best shopping is likely on Broad Street. It’s the main street in this city of 80,000 and has the island’s largest department stores, shopping malls and duty-free shops.
Other streets, such as Swan Street, Roebuck Street and Tudor Street, are home to smaller shops and businesses, as well as wayside vendors.
If you’re ready for a meal, check out Holetown, especially 1st and 2nd streets. There’s a variety of eateries there and you’ll find everything from barbecue to bistro, to pizza, fish and stir-fry.
